125 Years Automobile
Few other towns in the world have such a close relationship with automobiles as Mannheim. This is where Carl Benz submitted the patent for his groundbreaking invention in 1886 and where his wife, Bertha Benz, set off on the first long-distance automobile trip in a three-wheeled motorized vehicle.
With this trip, Bertha Benz helped the motorcar achieve its breakthrough and rapid spread throughout the world. Even today, the automotive industry is still Germany’s key industry.
